ST.PETERSBURG: THE KARELIAN ISTHMUS

Program 1.
From Lake Ladoga to the Gulf of Finland.

6 days hiking route by backcountry of Karelian Isthmus.

Day 1. Departure St.Petersburg by car or train and arrival to Priozersk (a town on the north) - 2.5 hours. Observation of the ancient fortress of Priozersk. Hike along the rocky lakeshore to the north. Campsite at the Small Rock Massive (granite cliffs at the Lake Ladoga). Distance to cover 10 km.

Day 2. Hike to the north and reaching the Big Rock Massive at the Yastrebinoye (Hawk's) Lake. Sheer cliffs of granite of 180 ft, which are dropping down to the lake. On this day the trail goes through typical wild landscape with pine trees forest, small forest lakes and wild berryes bushes. On the lake you can experience fishing, great swimming, lots of rock climbing and other pro-active sport activities. Distance to cover 25 km. Overnight at the campsite of "Wild Russia".

Day 3. Radial exploring the Big Rock Massive. Second night on the lake Yastrebinoye.

Day 4. Continue hike to the lake Vuoksa to the south-west. Campsite on the lake. Distance to cover 15 km.

Day 5. Hike to village Melnikovo. Distance to cover 17 km.

Day 6. Hike to the village Mullupelto. Distanse to cover 8 km. Get a train to St.Petersburg - 2.5 hours.

Services provided: a local English speaking guide, camping gear, tents, sleeping pads, all the meals en-route, all overland transfers, special near the state border territory permit.

Program 2. Lembolovo falls.

4 days hike through Lembolovo crosscountry.

Day 1.
Morning departure of St.Petersburg to Lembolovo by train - 2 hours. Hike to to the north to the Blue Lakes - 15 km. Overnight in tents in the pine tree forest at the lakes. The lakes are typical small forest lakes with sandy bed.

Day 2. Day hike to a chum, a remote hunting shelter made of tree branches. Overnight at the wild forest river bank. Distance to cover - 12 km.

Day 3. Continue hike to Vuoksa lake. Reaching the highest point of Karelian Isthmus - 234 m. Overnight at a forest brook. Distance to cover - 10 km.

Day 4. Continue hike to the village Petiyarvi. Visiting remains of ancient Finnish mill and hydro gap. Distance to cover - 14 km. Return train back to St.Petersburg

Program 3. Kizhi - Kivach waterfall.

4 days in Karelia and on the Onega Lake.

Day 1.
Departure by overnight train via the city of Petrozavodsk to Kondopoga. Hike along the lake Sandal. Overnight in tents on the lake shore. Distance to cover - 10 km.

Day 2. Continue hiking to the Kivach national reserve. Exploring the highest waterfall on the
north-west of Russia - Kivach. Overnight on a Karelian Lake in tents. Distance to cover - 15 km.

Day 3. Hike to the village Spasskaya Guba - 12 km and drive by bus to Petrozavodsk (1.5 hours). Overnight in a hotel.

Day 4. Hydrofoil boat excursion to the famous island Kizhi, where you will see a unique collection of ancient wooden Russian churches and some examples of Karelian wooden architecture. Return back to the city and afternoon sleeper train departure back to St.Petersburg.

Services provided: two local English speaking guides, camping gear, tents, sleeping pads, all the meals en-route, all overland transfers including overnight train 1st class cabin, special near the state border territory permit, hydrofoil to Kizhi, all the entrance fees, one night in the hotel in Petrozavodsk in a double-bed room.
