GEAR LIST
for the Mt. Elbrus Ascent
(standard program)

CASUAL CITY CLOTHES
a few lightweight, easily washable items for city wear

SHIRT
1 long-sleeve
1 short-sleeve

TROUSERS
Wool blend or pile pants (side-leg zippers are helpful)
Lightweight, full-length pants; polypropylene, nylon or wool blends
Hiking shorts
Gaiters (gaiters, which cover the whole boot are perfect)

UNDERWEAR
Thermal top and bottom
Regular, everyday type

OVERWEAR
Pile jacket or heavy sweater
Down vest
Thick “Patagonia” jacket

HEADWEAR
Scarf, face mask or neck gaiter
Bandanna
Wool or pile hat, balaclava is better
Light sun hat with wide brim

FOUL-WEATHER GEAR
Gore-Tex parka for rain and wind (must fit over bulky clothing)
Gore-Tex wind pants with side zips are best to get over your boots

HANDWEAR
Mittens, not gloves (wool, pile or polypropylene)
Over mitts
Thin liner gloves

SOCKS (bring 3 changes)
Heavy-duty (wool or pile)
Athletic-type (cotton or synthetic)
Polypropylene liners

SLEEPING GEAR
Summer or 3 season sleeping bag (rated between +15°F and +50°F). On Elbrus, we spend overnights in mountain shelters.

FOOTWEAR
Light hiking boots with traction soles
Plastic double boots. New fashion leather mountaineering boot/Supergaiters combination is suggested only if you are comfortable with these in extreme cold conditions.

EATING UTENSILS
Pocket knife
Plastic bowl cup and spoon
Two 1-quart plastic water-bottles

CLIMBING GEAR
Backpack, which is big enough to upload all you gear and carry by a cable way to the Barrels Huts.
Daypack for summit climb, 2000- 2600 cu" with ice axe loop.
Ice axe. 60 to 70cm length
Crampons (hinged); please have these fitted perfectly to your boots
Seat harness with adjustable leg loops
2 locking carbines
Ski poles or telescoping poles

ACCESSORIES
Glacier goggles or sunglasses with side protectors, ski goggles can also help cut the wind on the summit day.
First-aid kit
Personal kit (soap, toothbrush, toilet articles)
Toilet paper
Repair kit (needle, thread, nylon cord repair, repair tape, safety pins)
Headlamp with spare batteries
Sunblock and lipstick (SPF 30+)
Small combination lock for duffels
Stuff bags (assorted sizes and colors)
Plastic zip lock bags (various sizes)
Towel
Swimsuit
Any prescription medications
Watch/travel alarm
