Kamchatka: where the Earth bares its soul Kamchatka 1999 report Now you are just about to join us and explore a real Wild Russia, which is Kamchatka by all means. This short report is about our expeditions in 1999 on Kamchatka. A shot toward the Avacha Bay on a windy but superb evening at the panorama point in the city of Petropavlovsk.
On the way to Avacha volcano. Kostya, our leader, who climbed Avacha more then a hundred times, is heading our jeep toward the Avacha basecamp.
Early morning the ascent to Avacha starts and the sulphur steam from the crater looks like grey hair of the giant.
Just in front of Avacha the majestic Karyak volcano is sunshining in early sun beams.
Yes!! We've done it! We are on the top of Avacha after 5 hours of steady climbing. And one of us is celebrating his 49th birthday on the top of his very first mountain.
The panorama of Kamchatka's mountain ranges and insight to the Avacha Bay are splendid from the top of Avacha.
Standing right on the edge of the volcano's rim we see black and still hot lava fields.
After the successful descent from Avacha at the basecamp.
Our "URAL" truck, The Monster, which has 6 driving wheels. Equipped by a comfortable salon with big windows it is the only vehicle, which can cross Levaya Avacha river and reach Timonovskiye Springs through the wilderness. Capacity is up to 14 people plus the space for luggage. Mosquitoes are the major problem on Kamchatka. On the other hand an amaizing fact is that there are no frogs and snakes at all. On the right you can see The Monster stuck deadly in the dirt. It would not have been a real adventure otherwise it had not happened.
The famous valley of Geysers is still keeping wild atmosphere, because there are no roads to the valley except hunter's trails.
